Why Your Reels Get Views But Zero Business Enquiries

Most business owners I meet are genuinely proud of their Reels performance. They will show me their phone — 18,000 views on one video, 42,000 on another. Then I ask one question: how many enquiries came from those two Reels? The answer is almost always the same. Zero. Maybe one. And that one did not convert.
This is the most common trap I see with Reels for business right now. Founders or their social media teams are optimising entirely for reach — trending audio, fast cuts, aesthetic transitions — and completely ignoring the one thing that actually matters: does this video make someone want to contact me? Views and enquiries are two very different outcomes. You can have both, but only if you build your content with the second one in mind.
The first problem is that most business Reels have no clear audience. I have seen a Pune-based electrical contractor post Reels about his team and his office renovation. Nice content. But who is it for? A procurement manager at a factory? A builder? A facility head? When your Reel does not speak to a specific person with a specific problem, it entertains everyone and converts nobody. Before you script your next Reel, write down one sentence: this video is for a person who is dealing with this exact problem. Everything else follows from that.
The second problem is the missing next step. Reels are short. People watch and scroll. If you do not give them a reason to pause and act — right inside the video or in the caption — they will not. I have reviewed hundreds of business Reels where the video ends and there is no caption, no call to action, no link in bio that is relevant to the video topic. The viewer has nowhere to go even if they were interested. Your caption is not decoration. It is the place where you convert a viewer into an enquiry. Write it like a salesperson would speak, not like a content writer is trying to sound clever.
Third issue — and this one is painful to say — most business Reels are about the business, not about the buyer's problem. A manufacturer will post a factory tour. An interior designer will post a project reveal. A logistics company will post their fleet. All fine as brand content. But none of it answers the question the buyer is quietly asking while scrolling: can this person solve my problem? Your Reels need to show the problem you solve, not just the work you do. That is the difference between content that gets saved and shared versus content that gets a polite tap and a scroll.
I work with a lot of service businesses and manufacturers through my one-to-one consultation, and one shift I push all of them to make is this: move from showcase content to problem content. Instead of showing your product, show the situation your buyer is stuck in — and then show how you get them out of it. A 30-second Reel that says 'if your factory floor looks like this, here is what is going wrong' will always outperform a 60-second Reel showing your machines running smoothly with background music. One speaks to a pain point. The other just looks nice.
There is also the algorithm misunderstanding. Many business owners believe that if they post more Reels, the algorithm will eventually send them the right audience. It does not work that way. Instagram distributes your Reels to people who have shown interest in similar content. If your content is generic or entertainment-led, it reaches entertainment audiences. If your content is specific — about a niche problem, a niche industry, a niche decision — it will find its way to people who are actively thinking about that problem. Specificity is what makes Reels work for business. I cover this in depth at my business growth workshops because it applies to every platform, not just Instagram.
One practical framework I give founders: for every four Reels you post, make three of them problem-and-solution content aimed directly at your buyer, and one of them a behind-the-scenes or brand trust piece. Use the caption of every problem-solution Reel to tell the viewer what to do next — DM you a specific word, click the link in bio, or save the video for when they face that situation. Track which Reels generate DMs or profile visits, not just views. That is your signal. Optimise toward that.
Reels can absolutely generate real business leads for Indian MSMEs, manufacturers, service providers and founders. I have seen it happen when the content is built right. But you will not get there by chasing views, copying trending formats or posting without a clear buyer in mind. The phone starts ringing when your Reel makes the right person feel understood — and gives them one clear step to take.
