Why Your Website Gets Traffic But Zero Enquiries

Why Your Website Gets Traffic But Zero Enquiries — Website & SEO article by Abhijit JK, brand and business growth consultant

Most business owners I meet are proud of two things about their website. One — it looks good on mobile. Two — Google Analytics shows a few hundred visitors every month. But when I ask how many enquiries came from the website last month, the answer is almost always the same. Two. Maybe three. Sometimes zero. The website is getting traffic. Something else is broken.

Here is the uncomfortable truth. Traffic and enquiries are completely separate problems. Getting someone to land on your page is one job. Getting them to pick up the phone or fill a form is a completely different job. Most Indian business websites are built to impress — not to convert. There is a difference. An impressive website makes someone say 'nice'. A converting website makes someone say 'I need to contact these people right now'.

The first place I look during any website audit is the homepage headline. Not the logo. Not the colours. The headline. Because that is the first thing a visitor reads. And in most cases, it says something like 'Welcome to XYZ Enterprises' or 'Your Trusted Partner for Growth'. These mean nothing to a buyer. A manufacturer in Pune or a service business in Hyderabad needs their headline to answer one question immediately — what do you do, for whom, and why should I care? If your headline cannot do that in one line, you are losing visitors in the first five seconds.

The second issue is what I call the 'catalogue problem'. Many business owners treat their website like a product brochure. They list every service they offer, every city they serve, every certificate they have received. But a website visitor is not browsing a catalogue. They have a specific problem. They landed on your page because they searched for something specific. If your website does not speak directly to that problem — with clarity and confidence — they will leave and call your competitor. The page needs to speak to one type of buyer, not everyone at once.

Next, look at your calls to action. I have seen websites with beautiful design, good content, and zero clear next step. No phone number above the fold. A contact form buried at the bottom of a long page. A 'Learn More' button that goes to another page with more content and still no way to reach you. Every page on your website should have one clear, easy action for the visitor to take. For most Indian businesses, that action is either a phone call, a WhatsApp message, or a short enquiry form. Make it visible. Make it easy. Make it obvious. If you are unsure how to structure this, a one-to-one consultation can help you identify exactly where your website is losing buyers.

Speed is something founders rarely check. I have done website reviews for manufacturers and retail brands where the homepage takes nine or ten seconds to load on a mobile connection. For a buyer on the go — checking your site while commuting or during a break — that is too long. They will close the tab before your page finishes loading. Google PageSpeed Insights is free. Run your website through it today. If your score is below 60 on mobile, you have found a serious reason your enquiries are low. This is not a design problem. It is a technical one that any developer can fix in a few days.

One more thing most founders overlook — social proof placed at the right spot. Testimonials and client logos are powerful. But I see them placed at the very bottom of pages, after long paragraphs of company history and team bios. By the time a visitor scrolls there, they have already decided to leave. Move your strongest testimonial or client result to the top half of your page. Right after your headline and a brief description of what you do. Let a happy client speak before you spend three paragraphs explaining your process. This one change alone has made a visible difference for several businesses I have worked with. I cover this and related conversion principles at my business growth workshops for MSME founders.

If you want a structured way to find where your website is leaking enquiries, do a simple five-point check. One — read your homepage headline out loud. Does it say exactly what you do and who it is for? Two — time how long your site takes to load on your own mobile phone using a regular network. Three — count how many clicks it takes for a visitor to find your phone number or WhatsApp. Four — check whether any page on your site speaks to a specific buyer problem rather than listing your services. Five — see if there is at least one real testimonial with a name and company visible without scrolling. These five checks will tell you more about your website's problems than any paid SEO tool.

Traffic without conversion is just a number on a dashboard. It feels good but it does not pay salaries or fund growth. The fix is rarely about spending more on ads or getting more visitors. It is about making your existing traffic work. Fix the message. Fix the speed. Fix the call to action. Fix where your proof sits on the page. These are not expensive changes. Most of them cost nothing except a clear eye and a willingness to look at your website the way a first-time visitor does — not as the founder who built it. If you want help doing exactly that for your business, you can reach me through the contact page and we can take a close look together.
