Why Your Website Gets Traffic But Zero Enquiries
Most business owners I meet assume that if their website is getting traffic, enquiries will follow automatically. That assumption is costing them real money. Traffic and conversion are two completely different problems. You can rank on page one of Google and still have a website that converts nobody — because ranking and convincing are not the same skill.
I recently did a quick audit for a Bengaluru-based industrial equipment supplier. Their website had decent traffic — around 800 to 1,000 sessions a month from search. Genuine, relevant visitors. But they were getting maybe two or three enquiry form submissions in a month. Everything on paper looked fine. The problem was not Google. The problem was what happened after someone landed on their site.
The first thing I look for in these situations is what I call the 'so what moment'. A visitor lands on your homepage. They see your company name, maybe a hero banner, maybe a tagline. And then they ask themselves — so what? Why should I contact this company and not the three others I have already opened in separate tabs? If your homepage cannot answer that question inside five seconds, you have lost them. Most Indian business websites spend the entire homepage talking about the company's journey, certifications and number of years in business. None of that answers the buyer's actual question, which is — can you solve my specific problem, faster or better than others?
The second failure I see constantly is buried contact options. You would be surprised how many business websites make a visitor click through three pages before they find a phone number. Or the contact form asks for twelve fields including GST number and company turnover before the buyer has even decided if they trust you yet. Every extra step between interest and contact is a place where you lose someone. One phone number, visible on every page. One simple form. That alone moves the needle. If you want a proper look at what is holding your specific website back, a one-to-one consultation is often the fastest way to get a clear answer.
Third issue — and this one is specific to service businesses and B2B manufacturers — is vague language. Pages full of sentences like 'we offer end-to-end solutions with a customer-first approach'. That means nothing to a buyer who is searching for a specific thing. Compare that to a competitor who writes 'we supply MS pipe fittings to construction companies in Karnataka, with same-week delivery for orders above 50 units'. That second version is something a buyer can immediately recognise as relevant to their need. Specificity builds trust faster than polish.
Mobile experience is the other place where Indian business websites silently bleed enquiries. Nationally, well over 70 percent of search traffic happens on mobile. I have seen websites where the contact button goes below the fold on a phone screen, the text is microscopic, and the form does not load properly on Android. If your last website update was done three or four years ago and was built for desktop, there is a real chance you are invisible to mobile visitors in a practical sense — they come, they struggle to navigate, they leave. Test your own website on your phone right now. Not on your laptop. Your phone.
The fifth and most overlooked reason is that the page a visitor lands on does not match what they searched for. Someone searches 'custom printed packaging for food products Pune' and they land on your generic homepage. Now they have to search your site themselves to figure out if you even do that. Most will not bother. This is a landing page problem, and it is fixable. If you are running Google Ads or even ranking organically for specific services, each service or product category should have its own page that speaks directly to that buyer. This is something I cover in depth during business growth workshops for manufacturers and product businesses — because it directly affects both marketing cost and conversion rate.
One quick thing you can do this week without any developer: Go to Google Search Console, look at the search queries bringing people to your site, and pick the top five. Now open those pages on your phone and ask honestly — if I had this problem and landed here, would I call this company? That one exercise will show you exactly where the gap is between your traffic and your enquiries. Most business owners have never done this. It takes twenty minutes and costs nothing.
A website is not a digital brochure that exists to look nice. It is a salesperson that works at 2 AM when you are asleep. And like any salesperson, it needs to do three things: get the visitor's attention, be relevant to their specific problem, and make it dead simple to take the next step. When your website does all three, enquiries follow. When even one of those breaks down, traffic becomes a vanity metric. If you are not sure where your website is breaking down, visit about Abhijit to understand how I work with founders to fix exactly this.
