Why Your Instagram Reels Reach Strangers But Not Buyers

Why Your Instagram Reels Reach Strangers But Not Buyers — Social Media article by Abhijit JK, brand and business growth consultant

Most business owners I meet are genuinely putting in the effort with Reels. They're shooting videos, adding trending audio, posting consistently for weeks. The views go up. The followers slowly grow. And then they look at their enquiry inbox — nothing. Or worse, DMs from people who have zero intention of buying. This is one of the most frustrating places to be as a founder, because the effort is real but the returns feel invisible.

Here is the truth nobody tells you clearly: Instagram's algorithm is designed to spread content to people who will watch and engage — not to people who will buy. Those are two very different audiences. A reel with a trending audio and a satisfying process video will get shared widely across people who find it entertaining. But entertainment and purchase intent are rarely the same thing. When you optimise only for reach, you get reach. When you need buyers, you have to build differently.

The first mistake I see constantly is that founders pick topics based on what is trending rather than what their actual buyer is searching for or thinking about. A furniture manufacturer in Rajkot posts a satisfying woodworking process reel — it gets 80,000 views from across India and abroad. But his buyers are interior designers and housing contractors in Gujarat. None of those 80,000 people are his customers. The content was great. The targeting was nonexistent. Views feel like progress. They rarely are.

The second mistake is speaking to everyone and therefore speaking to no one. Your reel caption says 'We make premium furniture.' That tells a buyer nothing. What kind of furniture? For whom? In what city? At what price point? What problem does it solve? When your content is vague, only the algorithm benefits — it can show it to a wider pool. But a serious buyer scrolling Instagram needs to immediately feel 'this is for me.' If that moment doesn't happen in the first two seconds, they scroll past and you never existed. I cover exactly this kind of positioning work in my one-to-one consultation with business owners who are stuck in this cycle.

The third issue is the call to action — or the complete lack of one. Most Reels end with the product or the process on screen and nothing else. No next step. No reason to reach out. If a potential buyer watches your reel and is genuinely interested, what should they do? If your answer is 'follow me' or 'like and share', you have trained your audience to be passive observers, not enquirers. Every reel that is meant to generate business should have one clear action — send a DM, click the link in bio, visit the store, call this number. One action. Not five. Not zero.

Now here is what actually works for Indian business owners trying to use Reels to generate real enquiries. Start by making a list of the ten most common questions your buyers ask before they purchase from you. Those ten questions are your next ten Reels. Not trending audio, not random product showcases — direct answers to buyer doubts. A coaching institute in Pune answering 'how long before my child sees improvement' will reach fewer people but reach the right people. That parent watching at 10 PM who has that exact question in their head — that is your buyer. Reach them specifically and they will contact you.

The second thing that works is location and community signals. If your business serves a specific city or region, mention it naturally in your script, your caption and your hashtags. 'We deliver across Bengaluru' or 'Our workshop is in Surat' — these lines filter your audience better than any algorithm trick. It sounds simple but most founders skip this because they want to appear national or global. Unless you actually serve nationally, hyper-local signals bring you buyers, not browsers. At my business growth workshops, this is always one of the first practical exercises I run with founders who sell in specific geographies.

The third thing is trust-building content mixed in with your product content. Buyers on Instagram do not enquire after watching one reel. They watch three, five, sometimes ten pieces of content before they decide to reach out. If all your reels are product showcases, there is no relationship being built. Add in reels where you show your process, your team, your quality checks, your delivery, a happy customer moment, a behind-the-scenes shot of how you work. This is founder-led content and it builds trust faster than any paid ad ever will. The buyer starts to feel they know you before they call you.

One last thought. Reels are not a replacement for a clear brand strategy — they are one channel within it. I have worked with manufacturers and service businesses where the Reels started performing only after we fixed the Instagram bio, the profile positioning and the link-in-bio page first. If someone visits your profile after watching your reel and the profile makes no sense, they leave. The reel did its job. The profile failed. Fix the whole system, not just one piece of it. If you want help auditing where exactly your content is losing buyers, feel free to contact me directly and we can figure it out together.
